Origins of some of our strange customs

Origins of some of our strange customs, and common words

1. WHY:

Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left?

BECAUSE:

When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right! And that's where women's buttons have remained since.

2. WHY:

Why do ships and aircraft use 'mayday' as their call for help?

BECAUSE:

This comes from the French word m'aidez - meaning 'help me' - and is pronounced, approximately, 'mayday.'

3. WHY

Why are zero scores in tennis called 'love'?

BECAUSE:

In France , where tennis became popular, the round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was called 'l'oeuf,' which is French for 'the egg.' When tennis was introduced in the US , Americans (naturally), mispronounced it 'love.'

4. WHY:

Why do X's at the end of a letter signify kisses?

BECAUSE:

In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually became synonymous.

5. WHY:

Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called 'passing the buck'?

BECAUSE:

In card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing, he would 'pass the buck' to the next player.

6. WHY:

Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast?

BECAUSE:

In earlier times it used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him a poisoned drink. To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of the host. Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his host, he would only touch or clink the host's glass with his own.

7. WHY:

Why are people in the public eye said to be 'in the limelight'?

BECAUSE:

Invented in 1825, limelight was used in lighthouses and theatres by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theatre, a performer 'in the limelight' was the centre of attention.

8. WHY:

Why is someone who is feeling great 'on cloud nine'?

BECAUSE:

Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud. If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares.

9. WHY:

In golf, where did the term 'Caddie' come from?

BECAUSE:

When Mary, Queen of Scots went to France as a young girl, Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scots game 'golf.' He had the first course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment. To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her. Mary liked this a lot and when she returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced ‘ca-day' and the Scots changed it into caddie.

10. WHY:

Why are many coin collection jar banks shaped like pigs?

BECAUSE:

Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of dense orange clay called 'pygg'. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as 'pygg banks.' When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a container that resembled a pig. And it caught on.

And now you know the origins of some of our strange customs! .....

WEATHERING THE STORM

WEATHERING THE STORM: WHEN MOBILE BECOMES AN ABSOLUTE NECESSITY

When Hurricane Sandy bore down on America’s East Coast, those threatened turned to AccuWeather mobile in record numbers for life-saving information. Throughout the storm, AccuWeather was ahead of other weather sources in identifying Sandy’s threat to the East Coast, and in warning of its potential for high winds, heavy snow, and a dangerous impact that would reach far inland.

Safety and weather updates were crucial for storm goers and a record-breaking 34 million people relied on AccuWeather mobile apps and the mobile web to prepare for and monitor the hurricane. Users turned to AccuWeather’s up-to-date radar and its comprehensive hurricane section, and benefitted from the pushed severe weather alerts included in many of AccuWeather’s mobile apps.

In this emergency, mobile advertising also became a critical type of information. AccuWeather, with the help of [a•mo•bee]’s ad serving platform, PULSE for Publishers, provided advertisers with a robust infrastructure to deliver life-saving information targeted to the most threatened geographic regions, in real time. Among the advertisers was disaster recovery expert ServPro, who was able to use AccuWeather’s contextual inventory to present critical information, products and services to the right people, in the right place, at the right time.

“Sandy was an extraordinary event – a hurricane embedded in a winter storm,” said Barry Lee Myers, CEO of AccuWeather. “The wide-spread power outages demonstrated once again mobile is a necessity and not just a convenience when it comes to our mission of saving lives and protecting property.”

“Relevance is key in mobile advertising and sometimes relevant information can save lives,” said Trevor Healy, CEO of [a•mo•bee]. “In situations like this, simple advertising is replaced with critical information about products and services for the people facing adversity, like the victims of Hurricane Sandy.”

The destructive Hurricane Sandy spanned across New England, causing severe devastation across 24 states. Flooded substations and downed power lines caused at least 3.1 million power outages in many large cities across the Northeast. For many of the displaced victims, their mobile devices were their only connection to the world.

Originally just used as an ornamental plant, lucky bamboo is now becoming a popular gift for many occasions. Lucky bamboo is frequently used as a housewarming gift, because the plant adds something that is easy to care for, unlike other house plants which can be difficult to care for when a family has just moved. Lucky bamboo is also being used with more and more frequency for wedding favors. Because they can come in such tiny sizes, brides are choosing to have specially made little pots for their lucky bamboo favors. They are also being used as favors at other parties like bridal showers and baby showers. While lucky bamboo isn't technically bamboo at all, most people think of its curly stems and long leaves when they think of bamboo. Easy to care for and growing in popularity, lucky bamboo will be a staple in many homes for years to come.

If your lucky bamboo is healthy, you'll notice that it quickly outgrows its original shape. Instead of maintaining the nice, twisted corkscrews or interlocking patterns, the new shoots tend to grow straight up. Attractive at first, they will quickly result in an unbalanced plant. Fortunately, lucky bamboo is easily propagated.

Taking cuttings. The first step is to take a healthy cutting. I usually take cuttings after I've trimmed the mother plant. Make sure the cuttings have at least one leaf joint, and preferably more. Trim excess leaves away to expose the growth node. Lucky bamboo can be rooted bare, or you can use a rooting hormone. Under normal circumstances, rooting hormone shouldn't be necessary because the plant readily roots. However, if you have several failed attempts, a rooting hormone might increase your chances.

Rooting lucky bamboo in water. This is the preferred method. Take trimmings that include at least one leaf joint and put them into distilled water. New, slightly reddish roots should emerge from the bottom of the stalk. Keep the water clean. Once the roots have emerged, you can either put the plant in a vase with decorative pebbles or pot it up in regular soil.

Rooting lucky bamboo in soil. Lucky bamboo will also readily root in soil. To root a new plant, gently push the trimmed stalk down into fresh potting soil, making sure that at least one root node is beneath the soil level. Keep the plant moist and warm until new growth begins to emerge.

When rooting lucky bamboo, however, remember that the new plant will not have the same distinctive stalks and growth habit of the parent. It'll still be a pretty and resilient houseplant, with narrow green leaves and straight stems, but it won't look like a professionally shaped and grown lucky bamboo.

Wayanadan Bamboo Rice

‘Bamboo rice’, collected from the seeds of flowered bamboos, has become a major source of income for tribals living in the interiors of Wayanad wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. The sanctuary, a rich abode of bamboo groves, has witnessed enormous flowering of the tropical tree this year. With this, the indigenous communities in the region, who earn daily bread by collecting and selling forest products, has got an unexpected harvest.Small tribal groups, mainly women and children collecting bamboo seeds, have become a common scene in the sprawling jungle fringes here.A tribal group, that collect bamboo seeds on regular basis, said they usually sell unprocessed seeds for Rs 50 to Rs 70 a kilogram at the local shops in Sulthan Bathery and Pulpalli near here. The processed bamboo rice would fetch Rs 100 per kilogram. But, in the open market, the price is up to Rs 200 per kilogram, says an NGO working among tribals here who help them to sell products in outside markets. With resemblence to paddy rice and wheat-like taste, bamboo rice is comparatively much richer in protein. Not only tribes but local people here also consider it as a good substitute for rice. A wide range of delicacies like payasam, unniyappam (sweet balls), uppumavu and puttu, made of bamboo rice, are high on demand in the tourists centres and homestays in Wayanad, a major highrange tourist hub in Kerala.“The nutrituous value of bamboo rice is very remarkable. It is more healthy to have bamboo rice than the rice from paddy,” a scientist with the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) said.According to forest department, a similar enormous flowering was reported in the district in 1911 and later in 1990. The recent continuous flowering of bamboo had started since 2005.Usually, bamboo groves flower once in 12 years. The flowering process within the sanctuary is almost at its last phase, local people said. (PTI)

Origin of Bamboo

The plant known as bamboo to the entire world has been around and used for centuries. Records dating back more than seven thousand years talk about products made of bamboo such as arrows, paper, building materials, and books. Because of its origins, the current way it is used, and the economic sustainability of the plant, bamboo is an excellent resource.

The TomTato...

The TomTato...

or how you can make ketchup AND chips from the same plant!

'TomTato' is made from two separate plants grafted together
Each one can yield over 500 cherry tomatoes and a crop of potatoes
Long a favourite of experimental gardeners, it is now going on sale for the first time in the UK

With tomatoes at one end and potatoes at the other, it looks like the product of some Frankenstein food laboratory.
But far from being the latest genetically modified monster, this horticultural wonder is entirely natural.
Called the TomTato, each plant can yield more than 500 sweet cherry tomatoes as well as a decent crop of white potatoes.

It is produced using a hi-tech grafting process and was unveiled to the public yesterday before going on sale to gardeners in the UK for the first time.
The project took a lot longer to bear fruit than the plant does, however.
It began 15 years ago when Paul Hansord, horticultural director of mail order gardening company Thompson Morgan, was on a trip to the US. He spotted a potato plant growing separately under a tomato plant and learned that it is possible to graft the two together because they belong to the same family.

Hybrid: The 'TomTato' plant produces cherry tomatoes from its stem and potatoes from its roots

His problem was how to develop the idea so the plants could be sold commercially.
The stumbling block had been how to produce tiny potato plants which have stems the same thickness as seedling tomatoes, so that the two can be joined together perfectly.
But after a process of trial and error, and with the help of grafting specialists, Thompson Morgan hit upon a method using a variety of potato that produces the right size shoot.

Description of how the TomTato, tomato and potato plants grafted together, is made

Careful variations in the temperature at which the tomato and potato are initially grown are also made to ensure the two plants are a perfect match before being joined together.
‘At the start, we thought it’d just be a novelty thing to do. But as the trials developed we realised what we had produced was really high yield, had fantastic flavour and could be done commercially for the first time,’ Mr Hansord said yesterday.

Red Lime gives citrus fruit new zing

The Red Lime is the same size and shape as the usual green variety, but it combines orange and sour lime flavours
An exotic red lime that will give cocktails added colour and marmalade an extra tang has gone on sale in Britain. The red lime, pictured, thought to be a cross between a lemon and a mandarin, is native to India. The trees are being sold for £34.99 by Suttons Seeds of Devon and can be grown in a conservatory or on a patio. The firm says: ‘The peel is reddish-orange. The pulp has a limelike aroma and is a deep orange colour. They are very juicy.’
‘It can be planted from late April and produces trusses full of tomatoes which have a traditional tangy, sweet flavour from July to October and a good hearty crop of potatoes of a versatile variety, which can be boiled, mashed, roasted or made into chips, for late in the season.’
Mr Hansord added: ‘Each TomTato plant is specially grafted by hand to create this unique double cropping feature. There’s no genetic modification – it’s an all-natural, and safe process.’
Production begins in a specialist laboratory in Holland, where the delicate grafting process takes place. The plants are then shipped back to the UK and grown on in greenhouses until they are big enough to be sold.
The TomTato – which has been dubbed a ‘veg plot in a pot’ – can be grown inside or outside, in a large patio pot or 40-litre bag, on the allotment or in the vegetable patch, says Ipswich-based Thompson Morgan.

Travel Khana

Indian Railways is considered the lifeline of passenger transport in our country. It offers the cheapest mode of transport for millions. However, anyone who has travelled by Indian railways can never vouch for the quality of the food served onboard. It is more of a case of filling your mouth without bothering about the taste and food quality. Apart from the poor quality, railway pantry cars are known to serve unhygienic food as well!

Fortunately, a lot of private operators have emerged as an alternative to the lacklustre catering service provided by Indian Railways. Food on train companies like Travel Khana, YatraChef, Thaliwale now yatrachefprovide unique food delivery services, offering a widespread choice of food for travellers. Not forgetting to mention that quality and taste are the topmost factor on agenda as far as food on train is concerned.

Travel Khana has been the pioneer in offering food on train, which established its business in 2012. The company offered something that Indian railway travellers never experienced – quality food from the restaurant of their choice! The website caters to multiple railway junctions and major cities, offering a choice of Indian, Continental and Chinese food cuisine for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian customers. Pushpinder Singh, the company’s CEO says, “Be it Bhopal’s Celebration Restaurant or the much celebrated Biryani of Paradise Restaurant in Hyderabad, we provide a wide array of food to our customers!”

“Travel Khana was never a pet project. But when we started, we have been customers to the food available on Indian Railways, which is distant from anywhere one can call a standard. We have travelled in public transport systems, including buses, but the condition of train food remains as sad as it was 20 years ago. The main concern is not because of the management team, but more due to the lack of choices, which Travel Khana promises to alter. As we all know, our website gives the best food choices on selected trains and stations, and that’s something we are not happy about. We want all customers in maximum stations to have choices for the food they choose to pay for,” added Pushpinder Singh.

The process of ordering food is easy. All one has to do is to pick up the phone or order online. Travellers have access to a few quality restaurants, which cover the route they are travelling on. These restaurants are verified and tested based on stringent quality parameters. To order food is an easy task: select the website first, and then choose the date and the focal points of your travel. Once this is done, a list of restaurants catering to that particular route will come up. Then, you need to pick your choice of restaurant, select the type of food and order it. Once an order is placed, you will get a confirmation in the form of mobile SMS.

travel khana
Image via pnrstatus.co.in
When you place an order, convenient payment options are available in form of net banking, debit cards and cash on delivery. If you choose to avail the cash-on-delivery option, keep the exact amount of change in hand for a hassle-free delivery. You can also make advance orders for a future date of journey. It is not necessary that you have to travel to order food; you can also gift a packet of food for your near and dear ones as well.

The online catering of food does offer several advantages over the traditional way of ordering food. One can order food round the clock and the process is much faster. Secondly, one would be able to see a wide range of menu options. Last but not the least, one can see restaurant reviews along with their ratings, given by fellow customers.

With an aim to expand its reach to hundreds of stations and trains, Travel Khana will be soon adding new vendors for different states and include more stations and trains to its list for quick food ordering. The website is already in talks with many well known food chains and vendors and has given a handy railway timetable for its customers to understand bookings better. Currently, the website offers choices of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food along with Jain food choices for some of the stations listed and for special religious journeys. So with all these options, let’s hope the stale food on trains will be a thing of the past!

Dampa Tiger Reserve

Dampa Tiger Reserve

Find other destination

The Dampa Tiger Reserve occupies an area of 500 sq. km. and lies in west Mizoram in northeastern India, along the border between India and Bangladesh. The hills and forests in this 'Land of the highlanders' are considered by biologists to be "biogeographic highways" connecting India to Malayan and Chinese regions. The rich, luxuriant rainforests of Dampa harbour several species such as the swamp deer, tiger, leopard, elephant and hoolock gibbon. The Dampa Tiger Reserve is probably one of the last few safe havens for the tiger and a host of other animal and bird species. Low altitude galliformes are visible and the three species of Chloropsis found in India are endemic to these fabulous forests.
